Samurai Armour, Edo Period
Price: $12500 AUD
Provenance:
This set comes from an old and respected family from Kyoto, who have resided close to Nijo Castle for the last 11 generations. (Genroku 13, which is exactly 1700)
At the beginning of the Meiji era, (1868-1912) within the first 12 months, it is tradition for the families, to take stock and make a list of personal assets, that are kept in the traditional Kura.
This set of armour was already listed at the beginning of the Meiji period, proving that it was a family heirloom in Edo times. We have been told that this is the first time that this armour has been placed on the market.
The lacquered iron armour is in remarkable condition, with the Kabuto and hanbo almost perfect, however the original material, has insect damage, and the lower iron plates on the left hand side of the kusazuri (protective skirt) needs to be re-laced, which can quite easily be done in Japan.
It comes with it’s original storage box, with large gold mons (family crests) on two sides.
